Stewart McKinney 63K Walk for Mary
Stewart McKinney, former British Lion and ex rugby union international, was so moved by what Mary Peters has achieved with the Trust that he took on the challenge of walking 63K, one for each year of his life, to help raise money for the Mary Peters Trust. He is calling on all rugby clubs to donate and support him.
Stewart played his club rugby for Dungannon and went on to represent Ulster, Ireland and the British Lions on their famous undefeated 1974 tour of South Africa.
Stewart started at the Mary Peters Track on Sunday 9 May 2010 and completed the 63K walk in 10 hours, an amazing feat!
“I didn’t expect to finish until about 5.00pm”, said Stewart, “I have been walking 15K a day for the past 5 months, and decided to take it at a good steady pace, it was a big personal challenge for me and I am delighted to have completed the walk so quickly”. He continued, “Sport continues to be a huge and positive aspect of my life, it has given me lifelong friendships, it has taught me about discipline and given me skills that shape who I am today, if I can help Mary and the Trust in some way provide the same qualities for young athletes of tomorrow I will be very happy”.
Mary Peters said, “I and all those involved in the Trust are delighted that he has worked and indeed ‘walked’ so hard to be able to raise funds for us. Last year the Trust assisted over 160 sportsmen and women with bursaries valued between £250 and £5,000 and individuals like Stewart are a great combination of inspiration and practical help that we need to support us.”
